DID YOU KNOW... Parliament House in Canberra was purposefully designed with turf on the roof for three reasons. Firstly, for people to stand above parliament rather than parliament above the people. Secondly, to help reduce noise. But most importantly, because of its insulating qualities. The turf helps keep Parliament House cooler. When measures were taken on a 33˚C day, the surface temperature of the adjacent granite paving was 52˚C and the turf surface was 28˚C. Temperatures underneath the turfed roof slab were a stable 23˚C. Imagine the energy bill savings!
