Handy Tips
Apply 'Wetta Soil' in September/October, according to instructions. This will help water penetrate evenly through Perth's sandy soils and it also helps distribute fertiliser evenly. Correct use of this product is considered a must in Perth and will eliminate dead/dry patches in you lawn.
All suburbs have different soils so look for a fertiliser blend for your area.
Ask your local nursery for advice. Look for a fertiliser with a good nitrogen and potassium level, as well as additional trace elements such as iron and manganese.
Always apply fertiliser to a dry lawn and then water thoroughly, fertiliser applied to a wet lawn, or not sufficiently washed in, can result in leaf burn.
There are three main types of weeds in Perth:
1) Broadleaf - clover, bindii, flatweed usually start to appear at the onset of the cooler weather.
*treat late winter/early spring.
2) Cool Season Grasses - Winter Grass usually appears in May.
*treat before wintergrass appears.
3) Warm Season grasses - paspalum, crab usually on the onset of the warmer weather.
*treat as required.
The two main pests in Perth Lawn are:
1) Black beetle - prior to treating your lawn for black beetle infestations check the following:
a) how many beetles appear on the surface? 10-15 beetles per square meter indicates a problem so *apply appropriate treatment.
b) is the water actually penetrating the soil in the affected areas? Symptoms can be similar.
2) Cut worm - Cutworm are about 3-4 cm in length and are a brownish colour. They eat the leaves of your lawn causing small brown spots to appear. The presence of wasps and moths is also a clue to cutworm infestation. Treat as required.
*Ask at your local nursery for the correct product to treat the weeds AND pests you wish to eradicate or check the yellow pages for a licensed weed and pest control operator in your area.
